Barran Liebman is proud to announce that Ed Harnden, Co-Managing Partner, has been awarded the 2017 American Bar Association (ABA) Grassroots Advocacy Award for his outstanding commitment to the justice system, the advancement of access to justice, and the legal profession. The award is presented to an individual from across the nation who has made outstanding contributions to their bar associations and access to justice commissions, and who have played an integral role in successfully advocating or advancing ABA/organized bar legislative priorities in support of legal aid in Congress. Ed was the only individual honored with this award for 2017, along with the non-profit organization, KIND (Kids in Need of Defense). Justice Elena Kagan and ABA President Linda Klein presented Ed with the award at the 2017 American Bar Association’s Justice Awards Reception and Dinner at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Over a few days every spring, bar leaders numbering in the hundreds make their way up Capitol Hill for ABA Day to ensure that members of Congress know about key issues affecting the justice system and our legal profession. Ed has been making this trip for 21+ years to speak with our elected officials in support for increased funding for Legal Services, which channels money from Congress to local offices that provide civil legal services to eligible low-income Americans. In addition, ABA Day features the presentation of the Grassroots Advocacy Award to recognize particularly outstanding contributions made by individuals and bar associations. Ed is humbled to receive this award and is especially grateful for the comradery and support provided by our very own legal community, which has built a solid foundation for all to make a commitment to bettering the world and contributing to the advancement of access to justice. Ed reflects that he is “…even more honored to be a part of this group, which every day – day in and day out – works for justice, works for those who are in need.” Later in the eventful evening, Ed could not further express how honored he was to continue to serve “…among[st] those who not only stand for something, but stand up for something….I’m very cognizant of the powerful impact we can have out there in the real world by the way we treat people.”
Barran Liebman is very proud of Ed’s commitment to the community and is grateful for the recognition at this year’s ABA Justice Awards Reception and Dinner. To learn more about the American Bar Association, please click here.
